Policy Positions and Statements    Print Page

AAFA develops policy statements, comments, and letters of support regarding public policies that impact those with asthma and allergies. These statements are written both independently by AAFA and in collaboration with other health-focused organizations. AAFA’s public policy positions and statements aim to educate community and political leaders about relevant policy issues, and to express support or opposition to legislation that affects those living with asthma and allergic diseases.

A Declaration on Climate Change and Health – June 23, 2015
AAFA joined with other organizations to reiterate the public health community’s commitment to addressing climate change as a health issue.

Secondary Preventive Services – June 19, 2015
AAFA signed a letter to the Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in support of secondary preventive services, which prevent an existing disease or condition from worsening. Secondary preventive services can help those with asthma manage the disease and prevent asthma-related complications.

Electronic Health Records – June 15, 2015
AAFA submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding proposed changes to the Electronic Health Record Incentive Program.

Improving Care for Medicare-aged Population – June 14, 2015
AAFA submitted comments to the Senate Chronic Care Working Group to offer recommendations for improving care for Medicare patients.

Part D Beneficiary Appeals Fairness Act – June 1, 2015
AAFA signed a letter in support of the Part D Beneficiary Appeals Fairness Act, which enables seniors to appeal the placement of their medication on a Medicare Part D Specialty Tier.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Strategic Visioning – May 15, 2015
AAFA commented to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) regarding important research priorities for the next decade.

The Family Asthma Act of 2015 – May 15, 2015
AAFA supports the Family Asthma Act of 2015, legislation that would improve asthma research and public education programs across the United States.

The Climate Change Health Promotion and Protection Act – April 13, 2015
AAFA signed letter to Representative Lois Capps to thank her for reintroducing the Climate Change Health Promotion and Protection Act, which would help the public health community address the threat of climate change.

Ratepayer Protection Act – April 13, 2015
AAFA and other health organizations signed a letter in opposition to the Ratepayer Protection Act, which would delay and block critical clean air protections.

Children’s Health Programs Funding – March 26, 2016
AAFA signed a letter in support of an increase in funding for federal programs that help schools reduce exposures to indoor air contaminants through the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA)’s office of Children’s Health Protection and the Office of Radiation and Indoor Air.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Funding – March 20, 2015
AAFA signed a letter opposing the termination of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the House Labor HHS Subcommittee’s fiscal year 2016 spending bill.

Ozone Standards – March 17, 2015
AAFA and other health organizations provided comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the proposed National Ambient Air Quality Standards, which would restrict the amount of harmful ozone in the environment.

Dormant Therapies and 21st Century Cures – March 17, 2015
AAFA and other health organizations signed a letter in support of the inclusion of the Dormant Therapies Act into the 21st Century Cures Act draft bill. The dormant therapies provisions included in the draft would enable the development of new cures for diseases that would improve the quality of life for Americans living with chronic diseases and disabilities.

National Asthma Control Program – March 11, 2015
AAFA and other asthma organizations signed a letter in support of funding for the National Asthma Control Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Children’s Health Insurance Program – October 23, 2014
AAFA and children’s health organizations urged Congress to protect funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP).
