SUMMARY:AAFA Remembrance Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, 2026\, of National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and our division Kids with Food Allergies (KFA) are holding a Remembrance Day in honor of family members and loved ones who’ve passed from asthma or anaphylaxis. We also take time to remember other people who have needlessly been lost to preventable deaths. \nOn average\, 9 people in the U.S. die from asthma each day. A few hundred die each year because of serious allergic reactions\, called anaphylaxis [anna-fih-LACK-sis]. Most of these deaths were preventable. We believe one life lost to asthma or anaphylaxis is one too many. \nOn this day\, we reflect on our mission to save lives and reduce the burden of these diseases on individuals\, families\, and caregivers. \nWe dedicate May 28 as a time to celebrate and honor lives lost and to continue to make a difference in memory of the people who live in our hearts forever. \nIf you would like to honor someone on Remembrance Day\, send us a message at: stories@aafa.org.

DESCRIPTION:Valerie Vison was a beloved wife\, daughter\, sister\, co-worker\, and friend. She tragically lost her battle with mental health in 2024. Her husband of more than a decade passed a few years prior due to an asthma attack in their home. After his passing\, Valerie was passionate about funding for asthma advocacy. They are why we’re partnering with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) to host the inaugural The Valerie – Shining a Light Golf Tournament. \nJoin us on Friday\, May 29\, at Braemar Golf Course in Edina\, Minnesota. Shotgun start is at 8 a.m.\, followed by a luncheon and awards at noon after golf. We would love to see you. All are welcome! If you are unable to attend\, you can make a donation. \nAll donations will go to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)\, which is the leading patient organization for people with asthma and allergies. DESCRIPTION:AAFA joins We CU\, Allergy & Asthma Network\, and The Mast Cell Disease Society\, Inc. (TMS) in recognizing Urticaria Day (UDAY) on October 1\, 2026. \nWhat is urticaria (hives)? \nHives (urticaria) are a type of swelling of the skin and are a common symptom of allergic reactions. Hives are itchy\, raised bumps\, called welts or wheals\, on the skin. They can look like bug bites. Hives can be acute (lasting a short time) or chronic (lasting longer than 6 weeks). \n\nAcute hives are defined as hives lasting between a few minutes\, hours\, or days and no longer than 6 weeks. They can happen for a few reasons: allergic reaction\, infection\, or inflammation in the body.\nContact hives are a form of acute hives. The hives occur at the site of contact with the allergen or irritating substance\, up to 1 hour after the exposure. Contact hives can often go away if the area is washed off\, and otherwise usually go away within a day.\nChronic hives (chronic urticaria) occur almost daily and by definition have to last for more than 6 weeks. They are rarely caused by an allergic reaction to food or environmental trigger. The two common types of chronic hives are chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU)\, which are hives that occur for no known reason\, and chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU). CIndU are hives triggered by known physical factors such as cold\, heat\, pressure\, friction\, vibrations\, exercising\, sweating\, and UV sunlight (rare).\n\nAbout UDAY 2026: \n\nThe theme of UDAY 2026 is Take Back Control From Itch to Understanding.\nThis awareness day aims to highlight the unmet needs of people living with urticaria and the vital role of clinical research in driving progress.\nUDAY 2026 is supported by the Urticaria Network E.V.
