SUMMARY:Urticaria Day (UDAY) 2026
DESCRIPTION:AAFA joins We CU\, Allergy & Asthma Network\, and The Mast Cell Disease Society\, Inc. (TMS) in recognizing Urticaria Day (UDAY) on October 1\, 2026. \nWhat is urticaria (hives)? \nHives (urticaria) are a type of swelling of the skin and are a common symptom of allergic reactions. Hives are itchy\, raised bumps\, called welts or wheals\, on the skin. They can look like bug bites. Hives can be acute (lasting a short time) or chronic (lasting longer than 6 weeks). \n\nAcute hives are defined as hives lasting between a few minutes\, hours\, or days and no longer than 6 weeks. They can happen for a few reasons: allergic reaction\, infection\, or inflammation in the body.\nContact hives are a form of acute hives. The hives occur at the site of contact with the allergen or irritating substance\, up to 1 hour after the exposure. Contact hives can often go away if the area is washed off\, and otherwise usually go away within a day.\nChronic hives (chronic urticaria) occur almost daily and by definition have to last for more than 6 weeks. They are rarely caused by an allergic reaction to food or environmental trigger. The two common types of chronic hives are chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU)\, which are hives that occur for no known reason\, and chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU). CIndU are hives triggered by known physical factors such as cold\, heat\, pressure\, friction\, vibrations\, exercising\, sweating\, and UV sunlight (rare).\n\nAbout UDAY 2026: \n\nThe theme of UDAY 2026 is Take Back Control From Itch to Understanding.\nThis awareness day aims to highlight the unmet needs of people living with urticaria and the vital role of clinical research in driving progress.\nUDAY 2026 is supported by the Urticaria Network E.V. (UNEV)\, the UCARE network\, Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform\, and many organizations worldwide.

SUMMARY:AAFA Remembrance Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, 2026\, of National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and our division Kids with Food Allergies (KFA) are holding a Remembrance Day in honor of family members and loved ones who’ve passed from asthma or anaphylaxis. We also take time to remember other people who have needlessly been lost to preventable deaths. \nOn average\, 9 people in the U.S. die from asthma each day. A few hundred die each year because of serious allergic reactions\, called anaphylaxis [anna-fih-LACK-sis]. Most of these deaths were preventable. We believe one life lost to asthma or anaphylaxis is one too many. \nOn this day\, we reflect on our mission to save lives and reduce the burden of these diseases on individuals\, families\, and caregivers. \nWe dedicate May 28 as a time to celebrate and honor lives lost and to continue to make a difference in memory of the people who live in our hearts forever. \nIf you would like to honor someone on Remembrance Day\, send us a message at: stories@aafa.org.

SUMMARY:World EoE Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:AAFA joins the EoE Day Alliance in recognizing World Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) Day on May 22\, 2026. The theme selected for World EoE Day 2026 is “Food Shouldn’t Hurt.” \nWhat is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)? \nEosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic (long-term) allergic disease that affects the esophagus – the tube that carries the water and food you swallow to the stomach. When you have EoE\, eosinophils\, a type of white blood cell\, build up in the lining of the esophagus. Allergies\, mainly to foods\, cause this buildup\, and it can lead to swelling\, injury\, and inflammation. With EoE\, swallowing can become difficult\, or you might feel like food is getting stuck in your throat. \n#EoEDay aims to: \n\nRaise awareness of EoE and its symptoms\nEncourage people to seek medical advice for signs like difficulty swallowing or persistent reflux\nAdvocate for better care\, research\, and access to treatment

Allergic conditions span a wide range\, including asthma\, seasonal allergies\, eczema\, hives\, food allergies\, nasal polyps\, and mast cell disorders. This community of diseases are connected and often overlap. For example\, it is common for babies who have eczema to then develop food allergies\, seasonal allergies\, and asthma – which is the leading chronic disease among children in the U.S. \nThese conditions are often connected by type 2 inflammation. \nWhat Allergic Conditions Are Connected? \n\nAsthma\nAtopic dermatitis\, a type of eczema\nAllergies (pollen\, food\, dust mite\, mold\, animal dander\, latex\, drug\, and other)\nEosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)\nPollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS)\, also known as oral allergy syndrome (OAS)\nNasal polyps\, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps\nPrurigo nodularis\nMastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome\n\nIt is common for people with one type of allergic condition to have more than one of these diseases. If you have symptoms like coughing\, itching\, congestion\, sneezing\, or difficulty eating foods\, talk with your doctor. \nFor more information\, visit:\nMay Is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month: aafa.org/awareness\nType 2 Inflammation: aafa.org/type2

SUMMARY:National Eosinophil Awareness Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:AAFA joins the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED) in recognizing National Eosinophil Awareness Week\, May 17-23\, 2026. The purpose of this week is to create awareness and educate both the general public and the medical community about eosinophil-associated diseases. \nEosinophils are a type of white blood cell. The purpose of these white blood cells is to help you fight infections. Sometimes these immune cells are over-reactive and cause inflammation in the body. When a person has elevated numbers of eosinophils in their digestive system\, tissues\, organs\, and/or bloodstream\, without a known cause\, they may have an eosinophil-associated disease. \nThe purpose of this week is to create awareness and educate both the general public and the medical community about eosinophil-associated diseases.

SUMMARY:World Asthma Day Detroit - hosted by Climate Action Campaign
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, May 5\, 2025\, at 11:00 AM\, health professionals\, environmental justice advocates\, and a Detroit resident living with asthma will gather at William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor to mark World Asthma Day with a clear message: Michiganders are not expendable. \nAsthma affects 28 million Americans\, causing approximately 3\,500 deaths and 1 million emergency room visits every year and 44% of Americans now live in areas with unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution\, according to the American Lung Association’s 2026 State of the Air report. Detroit’s air quality is among the worst in the nation. Detroit’s frontline communities know this crisis firsthand. Black Americans are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with asthma and five times more likely to visit an emergency room because of it.  This disparity is driven in part by decades of redlining\, predatory zoning\, and industrial pollution concentrated in communities of color. \nThe Trump administration’s Polluters First Agenda is making things worse. By loosening restrictions on soot\, tailpipe\, climate\, and chemical pollution\, Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin have created a toxic cocktail of carcinogens that Detroiters are forced to breathe every day while treating their lives as expendable. \nThis World Asthma Day\, speakers will demand that the EPA uphold science\, and protect the communities most harmed by pollution. Clean air is not a partisan issue and Americans are not expendable. \nWHO: \n\nKathleen Slonager\, RN\, AE-C\, Executive Director\, AAFA Michigan Chapter\nThomasenia Weston\, Detroit Resident Impacted by Asthma\nSandra Turner-Handy\, Interim Executive Director\, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice\nBryan Smigielski\, Michigan Campaign Organizer\, Sierra Club\n\n  \nAbout the Climate Action Campaign \nClimate Action Campaign (CAC) is a vibrant coalition driving ambitious\, durable\, equitable federal action to tackle the climate crisis. By cutting carbon pollution and accelerating the transition to clean energy\, we will improve public health and create a more resilient economy and a more sustainable future for all.

SUMMARY:Food Allergy Awareness Month 2026
DESCRIPTION:During National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, we also focus on food allergy awareness. \nA food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a certain food as harmful and reacts by causing allergic symptoms. Foods that cause allergic reactions are allergens. \nAbout 20 million people in the U.S. have food allergies (16 million adults and 4 million children). We commonly hear about children with food allergies. But people can develop a food allergy at any age. Many adults develop food allergies even without a prior history of allergies. \nThere is no cure for food allergies. The only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the food you are allergic to. The good news is with the right steps\, you can manage your food allergies and live a full life. \nFind food allergy awareness information and social media tools on our Kids with Food Allergies website.
