SUMMARY:Food Allergy Awareness Month 2026
DESCRIPTION:During National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, we also focus on food allergy awareness. \nA food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a certain food as harmful and reacts by causing allergic symptoms. Foods that cause allergic reactions are allergens. \nAbout 20 million people in the U.S. have food allergies (16 million adults and 4 million children). We commonly hear about children with food allergies. But people can develop a food allergy at any age. Many adults develop food allergies even without a prior history of allergies. \nThere is no cure for food allergies. The only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the food you are allergic to. The good news is with the right steps\, you can manage your food allergies and live a full life. \nFind food allergy awareness information and social media tools on our Kids with Food Allergies website.

This community of diseases are connected and often overlap. For example\, it is common for babies who have eczema to then develop food allergies\, seasonal allergies\, and asthma – which is the leading chronic disease among children in the U.S. \nThese conditions are often connected by type 2 inflammation. \nWhat Allergic Conditions Are Connected? \n\nAsthma\nAtopic dermatitis\, a type of eczema\nFood allergies\nEosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)\nPollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS)\, also known as oral allergy syndrome (OAS)\nNasal polyps\, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps\nPrurigo nodularis\n\nIt is common for people with one type of allergic condition to have more than one of these diseases. If you have symptoms like coughing\, itching\, congestion\, sneezing\, or difficulty eating foods\, talk with your doctor. \n“In many cases\, early diagnosis can make a big difference. This starts with awareness and recognition\,” said Carver. “Type 2 inflammatory conditions impact millions of people\, but there are options available for \nFor more information\, visit:\nMay Is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month: aafa.org/awareness\nType 2 Inflammation: aafa.org/type2
